Periodontics
Or Periodontology is the specialty of dentistry that focuses on the surrounding structures of the teeth and the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of dental diseases that affect them, as well as the placement of dental implants.
The tissues that surround and support the teeth are known collectively as the Periodontium; which includes the gums, alveolar bone, cementum, and the periodontal ligament.
So What Is Periodontal Disease?
Periodontal disease is an infection of the gums that damages the surrounding soft tissue of the teeth, which, if left untreated can destroy the alveola bone and cause tooth loss.
Periodontitis or gum disease, as it also know, is one of the leading causes of tooth loss in adults, despite the fact it is generally preventable.

How To Prevent Periodontal Disease
The most common cause of periodontal disease (gum disease) is poor oral hygiene which leads to a build up of plaque.
Plaque is the film on your teeth caused by bacteria in the mouth, that has not been cleaned away with brushing. If plaque is left to harden it turns into tartar, also know as calculus, which then spreads below the gum line causing periodontal disease.
A good oral hygiene regime is vital for preventing gum disease.
- Brush your teeth twice a day
- Flossing everyday too!
- Consider using mouth wash after each meal
- Drink plenty of water
- Attend regular check up with a dentist
- Visit the dental hygienist in addition to your regular dental check ups.
